Nigh's Corner Shop - and others - from yesteryear

Hi,
This is a photograph I have been trying to find for several days. It shows Nigh's Stores at the top of Alma Terrace photographed in 1973. I eventually found it this morning but the original was quite faded. I have managed to scan it and, hopefully, restore some of the original colour.

I remember my mum using ration books to buy goods here in the early 1950s when rationing was still in force after the war.

I remember it was quite a dark and gloomy store and was owned by Bob Nigh who was a disabled veteran of the First World War.

Like many small, local stores, it eventually closed and was converted into housing.

Can you remember?

Rowe's the Carriers (I called them Rosie Carriers!)
Boases
Bailey the Butchers

Michell the Jewellers (Peter, the son,  played for the Pirates)

Timothy Whites

Woolworths

Home and Colonial
Drews
The Coop
Philips Toy Shop
Burtons the Tailors
Simpson's

I remember some of these shops but not all ... what about Jacobs, Phillips Toy Shop, Knees, Ann Collins Wool Shop ... along with Woolworths, all now gone.

If you ever went into Jacobs you may remember the system of overhead wires connected to a central office for the purpose of payment and giving change. A shop assistant would place the customer's money and an invoice in a cylindrical wooden container, about the size of a mug and this was connected to an overhead wire. He or she would then pull a cord and the container shot along the wire to the office. A few minutes later it would return with the change. I have more information about Market Jew Street including reminiscences by my parents, photographs and articles from The Cornishman.

These photographs should stir a few memories to all those PZ & Newlyn ex:pats. They were taken the day before the pool opened for the 2008 season, May 25th. We were staying in Newlyn for a weeks break. . .  Haydn Trezise

Hi,
How much do you remember of the Arcade Steps? Do you remember Austins Dairy which sold amazing  and unforgettable ice cream. They sold ice cream from their shop half way down the steps on the right and clotted cream from another shop at the top. (the one with blinds covering the windows in the photo). The house on the extreme left used to be Nighs Stores - to distinguish it from their main shop at the top of Alma Terrace, we always referred to it as "Bottom" Nighs.

"A quarter of sherbet lemons, please....."

This isn't Penzance but it's a typical corner shop from the 1950s or 1960s. I found it on Face book ... on a page called "I grew up in the 60s".
