One is for teachers: HOW do you build classroom community?
And the other, for parents and children: LET'S be a scientist.
As I'm a newcomer to Parker, I'm not sure if these classes will go.
We'll see.
I'll keep this post in touch with what happens.
Well, it's now the 31st and I've heard nothing from PACE, although I have left messages. I'll try again tomorrow.
January 12.
I have decided, for health reasons, to reschedule these classes until the spring, BUT, will instead run the parent and son/daughter, Let's be a scientist class, at the local elementary school (and run a couple of sessions at RAFT) . Yesterday I spent a couple of hours putting together a package of science activities and received a few emails this morning from parents wanting to know more.
Thes first one is this coming Thursday, so, blog readers, I'll keep you posted.
January 17.
Getting ready for tomorrow's class:
Let’s be a SCIENTIST!
- Scientists think
BIG thoughts about the world around them.
- Scientists think
about what they see, what they hear, what they smell.
- Scientists design
and carry out experiments.
·
Scientists talk with other scientists and learn from each other.
·
Scientists write notes and
draw pictures to explain what’s in their heads.
Well, this “hands-on”, science inquiry class
is for family scientists!
** Bring your son/daughter and work together on
scientific projects
- Create POCKET MUSEUMS
- Make and fly rockets, indoor kites, helicopters,
and boomerangs
- Design marble runs, spinning tops, and
flip-flops
- Make and race wooden spool and coke-can
dragsters
- Experiment with kitchen chemicals
And
much, much more…………
Two classes of ‘hands-on’ science activity

These classes were fun and went as well as I could have hoped.
FEBRUARY
Last Saturday I ran a workshop on Community Building.
Tomorrow and Wednesday, I run two after school sessions on 'Let's be a Scientist' at Buffalo Creek Elementary School.
Should be fun.

March 12 and 14
2 evenings with parents and children:
'Let's work with a scientist'
These classes went REALLY, really well. I was thrilled to see so many mums and dads working with their young scientists. There was such a fabulous atmosphere as they built bridges, flew helicopters, and made flip flops.........
March 15
Friends Teacher Prep. Program
9.15 - 12 noon
A morning of science with 30 student teachers went well, too, and, even though I was exhausted, the blend of dissecting an owl pellet and mounting the bones in a Pocket Museum, making and flying helicopters, figuring out the strength of a paper bridge,
AND discussing classroom practice was just so dead good!
