- Through My Eyes: On becoming a teacher. Published in 2012
A memoir of my childhood and early years as a teacher - see www.johnpaull.com for more details.
With every sentence, Mr. Paull illustrates for his reader how, by captivating a child's sense of wonder with the natural world, we can inspire a love of learning and exploration both inside and outside the classroom. Written as a memoir, Mr. Paull initially reflects on his childhood experiences in school. The teaching methods of the day didn't always mesh well with the heart of a young boy who was enchanted by the natural world around him. However, every event and circumstance of his youth and adolescence build a framework for what is truly to be valued in education and the experiences ultimately shape the mindset of the teacher that he would one day become.
Mr. Paull's reflections are charming and witty...full of dialogue that makes the reader feel as if they were a fellow student in the room or one of his pupils. It is the story of a man who has dedicated his life to educating children in an authentic environment that spills over with creativity and excitement.
At one point in his story, Mr. Paull recalls an event in a Latin course when his teacher said to him, "Heaven help us if the next generation of kids have teachers like you." I, on the other hand, suffer to think what the world would be like if we did not have educators like Mr. Paull. We certainly could use a few more like him.

As you know, I bought several books to give at Christmas. One went to my mother -- so critical, so hard to please. Her comments today were about how much she was enjoying Through My Eyes. If you can break through to my mother, you can influence anyone! Congrats, and thank you.
John Paull's book is authentic and beautifully written! It's a must-read for all teachers, but would appeal to everyone. You feel like you're alongside John Paull as he's in the classroom -- first as a student and later as a teacher. We all can remember that one teacher who "got" us and made education and learning come alive for us.
John Paull has an almost poetic way of capturing that transformation both for himself as a learner and then alongside his students as a teacher. He left me wanting more! In a good way!

Very inspiring and perceptive. I love stories about good innovative teachers, even though I am not one. He tells about his childhood through his teaching career. VERY Well written.

I thought the theme of the yellow amber was super because it was a metaphor for the teacher touching one child each day. I also didn’t know your childhood story so well as I do now. The most significant thing about the book is the idea that small things count in a big way…especially on a daily basis. I loved it.
